Character and Identity: The oldest city in Portugal (granted city rights in 1125). A pastoral atmosphere of rural nobility, with a stunning Roman bridge crossing the Lima River. A small and exquisitely maintained city.
National Role: Center of Vinho Verde and luxury rural tourism. Dozens of ancient estates (Quintas) have become guesthouses and wineries.
Historical Development: Crossed the Lima River via a Roman bridge that was expanded in the Middle Ages. Legend has it that the Romans feared crossing the river because they believed it was the Lethe River (river of forgetfulness) and that anyone who crossed it would forget their home.
Interesting Facts: "The river that soldiers feared" – the Romans refused to cross the Lima because they thought they would enter the underworld. Only when the commander crossed first and called out the names of the soldiers on the left (a proof he hadn’t forgotten), did they agree to follow him.
